Robert Glasper Experiment | Black Radio

Over the past several days or so I’ve been completely immersed in Civil Rights history (essentially, studying my tail off). When I’m studying I prefer to listen to good music, not too heavy on lyrics, but with the right feel . . . Just enough to sooth my soul. Robert Glasper’s latest effort Black Radio has slowly created a place in my iTunes study playlist as it’s own entity.

I’ll be an honest self proclaimed hip hop head and say I have heard very little of Robert Glasper, but this is why I stay connected with my peers. A good friend of mine from Morehouse suggested that I check Black Radio out and after seeing collaborations with artists of such high caliber I HAD to give it a shot. Such names include:

- Erykah Badu
- Lupe Fiasco
- Bilal Oliver
- Lalah Hathaway
- Ledisi
- Musiq Soulchild
- Stokley Williams
- Meshell Ndegeocello
- Yasiin Bey (Mos Def)
- KING

. . . Just a powerful lineup, and they definitely delivered.

Real Music is Crash Protected”

. . . In the sense that it forever remains relevant to the ever-changing sentiment of it’s listeners/believers. I even felt moved by a Lupe Fiasco verse again, I had been waiting forever but we’re back to a place where we verse. Take a listen below and check out the information of how to purchase the album. Please buy it, it’s completely worth it.

The Marathon | One Year Anniversary

This time last year I was blessed: I was hired after a long bout with unemployment (1 year of homelessness). I remember specifically people very close to me were urging me to go out for spring break last year. Not so much.  The only thing that mattered at that time was get my feet set in the earth, pave my own way. Now it’s the same deal, just more of a surplus than just trying to survive. For that, Alhamdililah.

This spring break my finances were focused on making my life a bit easier and clearing a path for some serious progress. I’ll share what these things are once I get there, but for now a quick couple of reasons why I chose to stick around Kennesaw and Atlanta for the week:

I get to build my future while reading historic documents all day with this view, family.

Blessed, the soundrack:

The Marathon | Spring “Break” 2012

I knew it was spring break when I saw this immediately after walking out of my american presidency midterm.

OK, so it’s Spring “Break” 2012.

After finally recovering from midterms and sleep deprivation I finally had the time to sit back and decide how I would spend my spring break. On one hand, i’ll never understand the idea of relinquishing money that could be made and the opportunity to catch up (or get ahead), in school or at work. On the other hand, I understand that you’ve gotta just sit back and appreciate life sometimes, otherwise it’ll just pass you (me) by. My life as of recent has been a delicate balancing act of appreciation and progress, so why should my spring break be any different?

With my new mobility I plan to become reacquainted with my city, that’s my fun. While I have my fun, here’s the academic end:

- Walter Rodney Symposium research paper
- James Baldwin chapter abstract
- Miscellaneous Classwork

No, seriously . . . this guy walked 300+ feet on a tightrope with branches in the way.

I’ll also be at work, at a job that I absolutely love. Though I’ll be leaving soon, my supervisor is setting me up so that upward mobility is not a problem. Case in point:

“Khalfani Lawson performs a broad range of assignments with efficiency and accuracy.  Khalfani displays flexibility in adapting to changing conditions and views new assignments as an opportunity for growth.  Khalfani effectively communicates with co-workers.  He is truly a team player and will be an asset.”

. . . a quick note sent along with my resume to the head of the diversity department and corporate recruiting. Mash’Allah.

I’ll be posting a few updates of dope places to head to around Atlanta throughout the week. Have fun and be safe!

Stic.Man ft. NYM – Let It Burn | RBG Fit Club

Gotta learn how to take the mind to another plane,
Higher than the pain, sensory’s in the brain.
It’s mind over matter, No struggle no muscle,
No quittin, no givin’ up, touch it out, suck it up.

We come from lineages that build pyramids,
Some want lean physique, some train to get big,
It’s that burn that separates the boys from the men
You want them abs like Roy? You gotta get them crunches in.

The King Center Archives | Bridging The Gap

The King Center (For Nonviolent Social Change) Archives are simply one thing; Amazing.

Now, ‘Amazing’ includes a multitude of things, so allow me to expound. In order to fully understand where an individual is, it’s almost imperative to grasp an integral understanding of the events that lead you to were you are. The beauty in what the King Center provides lies mostly in it’s role in identifying the events of past which lead to were we are now. Though a majority of seeking out the information that bridges the gap between past and present is an intrinsic endeavor, having the information available is one hell of a start in the right direction.

Though I work with a majority of the documents in the archives for a corporate entity, I am deeply vested in my work. I get to talk and theorize all day at Kennesaw State, but in the archives I get to immerse myself in YEARS of history and work that guides my studies.

I mean, it’s no secret that I seek to have an amazing library in which I’ve been through each text exhaustively so it comes to no surprise that I enjoy such a thing so much. Just a few examples of what it looks like where I work, and these texts are available for public research!

Not only are there a large amount of manuscripts, but there is a large collection of artwork and photography as well.

Shown above are a few magazines and newspapers. I’ve come across Jet Magazine a couple of times, some as old as the early 70′s. Other notable names are the Atlanta Constitution (The one before AJC), and Newsweek. The grey boxes to the left are the boxes that documents were stored in before my colleagues and I replaced them with new acid free boxes/folders. In each box there are anywhere between 100-200 documents.

Another side of the Library/Archives. Aesthetically it’s amazing, there is an air of authenticity with each book because they’ve been used and most are originals. Valuable information. Knowledge is power, so i’m blessed to have access to so much historically important information. Anyone can make a reservation to do some research in the King Center Archives, so i’ll list the information below. Trust me, simply visiting will have a positive impact on you. Thought I’d share.

Postscript: Keep in mind the new website launches on January 16th with the new layout and tab containing the digitized version of the documents in the archives.
